Transportation of the deceased child
In Switzerland, in principle, the transport of deceased persons is only permitted in specially equipped hearses. When a child dies, it is important for many parents to be able to define their short time with their child.
Therefore, it can be very important to take your child home. In recent years, in case of a death of a child, a procedure has evolved that meets the needs of parents in this exceptionally demanding and difficult life situation. If parents wish to take their child home for the period of farewell, this is supported in most maternity clinics and paediatric hospitals.
In most hospitals, you will be able to choose your child’s coffin, which will be delivered directly to the hospital.
With this, the transport home is also possible in a normal passenger car. Therefore, you do not need the services of an undertaker for the journey home.
For the little angels, the memory boxes of the association Stärnechind can be used as a final resting place.
Midwives, chaplains and undertakers can accompany you. The canton of Bern and the canton of Aargau have officially confirmed that parents or close relatives may transport their deceased child by car. There is currently no comparable confirmation in other cantons, even though this is generally being practised.
